WHY THE HYPE ABOUT READING?

A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only once. – George R.R Martin.  Is this really true? Is reading that important? Wondering why parents and teachers encourage us to read a lot? I always had these thoughts dancing through my mind whenever anyone spoke about reading.

Often, we kids think reading is boring, not attractive, it’s too long or we have an image of grandma sitting with books and that’s precisely a few reasons why we don’t even give reading a chance. Reading has a lot more to offer than any other hobby. Reading helps us practice imagination by letting the words describe a certain image while the reader manipulates the picture in mind. When we start reading in such a way each book takes us to a new height of imagination.

In the famous Harry Potter series, J K Rowling uses the famous spell ALOHOMORA (The one that Hermione uses to unlock doors in the first book) to the doors of our imaginative minds and takes us into a world of adventure and this book sure casts a spell - WINGARDIUM LEVIOSA (makes things (this book) levitate).

Alice In Wonderland- Lewis Carroll takes us to a parallel universe through Dorothy and her peculiar friends – The charm and wit of the Cheshire cat or the eccentric personality of Hatter will sure keep you asking for more. The book doesn’t hold back the incredible fantasy experience it gives young minds, it's pure magic for young minds and old alike.

Charlie and the Chocolate factory – Roald Dahl makes this one of the best choices of books for kids and adults alike. With a perfect blend of adventure inside the mysterious chocolate factory to teach us life lessons like Nothing is impossible, if you dream it, you can make it happen or Greed is unattractive. It someday will land you in a soup. The best things in life are worth waiting for. Trust the process. Charlie Bucket sets an example for kids by showing patience and taking his time to marvel at and enjoy every invention and room in Wonka’s Chocolate factory unlike the other 4 winners of the golden ticket.

When you read a book, you are entering a space created by the author, a world where you are free to imagine and make your own twists and turns. It also helps to improvise your language, adds to vocabulary and so much more. Reading makes you a powerhouse of knowledge.
